Wiener Floorball Verein (WFV) makes Austrian floorball history! With a dramatic final victory in a penalty shootout against regular season winner FBC Borovnica from Slovenia, the club from Vienna secured the title of the 3 Nations International Floorball League (3N-IFL) in Slovenia this weekend – and became the first Austrian club ever to do so.
Dramatic final: The comeback of dreams
After finishing fourth last year, WFV impressively demonstrated this year how much the team has developed. From the outset, the Viennese side presented themselves as tactically disciplined, strong in challenges, and with a clear game plan.
In the 15th minute, the Austrians took the lead for the first time, making it 1-0. For long stretches, the Austrians controlled the tempo and did not allow the Slovenian side Borovnica hardly any dangerous scoring opportunities.
But the regular season champions showed their skill, storming to a 3-1 lead and looking like they were putting the championship to bed with the third goal in the 56th minute, the game seemingly decided. The arena erupted; the regular season champions sensed the title within reach.
In the 58th minute, it was time for WFV to show what they were made of scoring twice in 2 minutes to equalise and send the game into Overtime, in the final. Despite high-caliber chances on both sides – including several dangerous shots after quick transitions – overtime remained scoreless.
Penalty thriller with a historical ending
The penalty shootout turned the final into a real test of nerves. A total of 14 penalties were needed before the final result was reached.
Four-goal scorer Vaclav Cernoch took responsibility – and converted with ice-cold precision on his decisive penalty shot. His goal put WFV on top of the 3N-IFL for the first time.
A milestone for Austrian floorball
For years, Skofja Loka dominated the 3N-IFL league, although they were eliminated in the preliminary round this year by VSV Unihockey, and Austrian teams were considered challengers. Now, for the first time, an Austrian club stands at the top.
From fourth place last year to champion 2026: Congratulations WFV!
