Great Britain Women will play their first ever home international fixtures this weekend. GB will host France in a pair of fixtures for the inaugural Lancashire Cup in The Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre in Preston, England.
Great Britain’s Women’s team have a history going back 25 years and was re-established in 2022 but have never hosted a home international, playing all their prior fixtures abroad in International and Exhibition competitions.
National team captain Megan Geddes, who made history earlier this summer being the first player developed in the UK to play professionally in Sweden outlined the importance of these fixtures. “We’re incredibly excited and proud to have the opportunity to represent our country on home soil. We hope this can inspire more people across the UK to play Floorball and help its growth in the UK”
Great Britain’s very experienced coach Viktor Sheffield, who has had a storied career in the Swedish Super League and currently coaches SSL outfit Warberg IC, highlighted the importance of this weekend for his larger ambitions for the team. “It will be fantastic to play at home in the UK, and we hope lots of people come and watch the games. For the team it is about preparation for the World Championship Qualifications (in November) so everyone can expect a team determined to give it all. See you next week in Preston!”
Head of UKFF National Teams Dean Smith, who has been instrumental in GB hosting The Lancashire Cup, summed up the importance of the tournament and the progress being made under Sheffield. “The Lancashire Cup is more than just another tournament. The Great Britain team has been making good progress and now we have the opportunity to show the British public how far we’ve come and to show them what our team is made of. Both squads are preparing for the upcoming World Championship Qualifications, so people can expect to see two strong teams giving it everything”
