The International Floorball Federation (IFF) has officially entered the selection process for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, following an invitation from the 2032 Organising Committee to submit proposals for additional sports.
As part of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) flexible framework, host cities have the right to propose sports that align with their local culture and the evolving Olympic vision. For the IFF, this invitation represents a vital opportunity to present floorball’s potential at the highest level of international sport.
During preliminary discussions, the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee explicitly stated that their evaluation of additional sports would prioritize disciplines with minimal requirements regarding the number of participating athletes and the overall duration of the competition. This focus on operational efficiency is a decisive factor in the current selection cycle.

A Strategic Focus on 3v3 Floorball
The IFF’s proposal centers on the 3v3 discipline—a fast-paced, youth-oriented format designed to fit the modern Olympic “Urban Cluster” concept. This high-intensity version of the game has already proven its global appeal through two successful World Championships and offers several key advantages for an Olympic host:
- Efficiency: With a proposed structure of six teams per gender and six athletes per team (36 per gender in total), the discipline offers an exceptionally low athlete footprint while maintaining high competitive integrity.
- Infrastructure: The discipline requires no new construction, utilizing existing multi-purpose indoor venues.
- Sustainability: A low-cost, high-impact model that aligns with the IOC’s “Olympic Agenda 2020+5.”
Managing Expectations in a Changing Landscape
While the opportunity to present a bid is a significant milestone, the IFF remains realistic about the selection process. Following the expansive sports program seen in Los Angeles 2028, it is widely anticipated that Brisbane 2032 will look to streamline the number of additional sports to ensure financial and operational sustainability. The competition for the limited “additional sports” slots is exceptionally high, and the likelihood of floorball making the final shortlist remains a significant challenge. However, the value of the current dialogue extends far beyond the 2032 Games.
“It was essential for us to demonstrate that the IFF is not only ready but capable of delivering a discipline that meets the most stringent requirements of the Olympic movement,” says IFF President Filip Suman. “Even though the path to the shortlist is incredibly narrow, being at the table with Brisbane 2032 allows us to increase the global awareness of floorball and showcase our 3v3 format as a turnkey solution for future multi-sport events.”
The IFF continues to work closely with its member associations and international partners to ensure that floorball remains a constant and credible candidate for the evolving Olympic program.
